This year's Canadian Educational Researchers' Association (CERA) conference will be held at the Wilfrid Laurier University Campus in Waterloo, ON from May 26 - May 30, 2012 as part of the Canadian Society for the Study of Education (CSSE) annual conference.
CERA's focus is on methodological issues in qualitative & quantitative research, classroom and large-scale assessment and measurement & evaluation. Given our focus, we have a number of events that may be of interest to AERO members. To give you a sense of the sessions that CERA is hosting, we have attached a two-page summary of our program to this email.
We would also like to draw your attention to the following three sessions that may have particular relevance for AERO members:
(1) CERA Pre-Conference on Classroom Assessment
This year our preconference is called Crossing Boundaries - Substantive & Methodological Issues in Classroom Assessment. It will be held on Saturday, May 26 from 10:00 am - 3:00 pm. The goal of this session is to bring those with an interest in classroom assessment and classroom assessment research together to learn about one another's work, engage in dialogue about methodological and/or substantive issues in classroom assessment, and forge new research collaborations. The session will begin with a presentation by Dr. Lorna Earl to situate the conversation. Participants will have the opportunity to share projects they have underway and discuss ideas for future research. Pre-registration is required and lunch is included ($40 faculty/practitioners; $25 students). Please contact Martha Koch (martha.koch@utoronto.ca) to register.
(2) CERA/CSSE Spotlight Session on the Classroom Assessment Standards
This year CSSE has a new initiative in the form of Research Mobilization Spotlight Sessions. These sessions are intended to emphasize knowledge mobilization, make connections between research and practice and have broad community appeal. The title of CERA’s spotlight session is The Classroom Assessment Standards: Our Ongoing Efforts to Improve Assessment Practices in K-12 Education. The session will be presented by Don A. Klinger (Queen's University), Patty McDivitt (Data Recognition Corporation), Barbara B. Howard (Appalachian State University) and W. Todd Rogers (University of Alberta) on Sunday, May 27 from 10:00 – 11:15 am.
(3) CERA Invited Workshop on Mixed Methods
In this interactive workshop, Mixed Methods in Educational Research: The Time Has Come, Henry Schulz and Bev Fitzpatrick have been invited to share their expertise with conducting mixed methods research. The workshop will address both theoretical and practical aspects of mixed methods research in educational settings. A set of notes with theoretical perspectives, samples of mixed methods questions, typologies and practical approaches will be provided for each participant. The session and materials are in English. The workshop will take place on Sunday, May 27 from 1:15 to 4:15 pm. A fee of $20 will be charged to offset the cost of materials and refreshments. Pre-registration is required.
